Surrey Social Care Awards – 9 November 2018

At Carers at Home, we pride ourselves on the highest levels of care, and over the last 10+ years we’ve received some fantastic testimonials from our clients, relatives, medical professionals and wardens. We’ve listed some of these below (removing names to maintain client confidentiality).

At Carers at Home, offering the best in care begins with our team, so it’s reassuring to know that our care workers have also given us some great feedback. We’ve highlighted some of their comments below. If you’d like to offer a testimonial, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Client:

When ES visited JC recently, she said “You walked in today and brightened up my day, I do want the visits.”  This lady often feels the visits are pointless but has them because her daughters wants them in place.

JR now lives in a residential home in Guildford and the carers take her for a weekly 4-hour social visit so she can access community leisure activities and also to church on Sunday. At her review today JR said, “I am very happy with the agency and I think the carers are excellent. I only wish I had you when I was living at home.”

When Lilly was visiting ME (client) she said, “You have a smashing team. I like all the girls that come to me, we have a chat and a laugh, they are like family to me. I tell everyone who needs help to got to Carers at Home because they are the best.”

C went to visit RB (client) and he was very complimentary of Carers at Home and the carers. He said they are all fantastic. He was especially complimentary of E as he had taken the time to visit him in hospital when he was in.

JW telephoned to say she is moving to Kent and the last visit was yesterday. JW said, “The carers have all been so good, I have had fantastic care. Pocket Rocket (S) has been super and  CS has also been really good.” She added “I have no complaints and appreciate all the care, it has been a pleasurable experience, thank you so much, I will be sorry to lose my girls.”

At the review, ME said “I have no complaints, all the carers are very good and I’m very grateful for all the help I get.”

At the review client, KM, answered positively to the question ‘Did you find the manager/deputy manager friendly, professional and sensitive when carrying out the assessment?’ KM said “Absolutely, E was lovely.”

KM added that she feels she gets good care, the carers that come are wonderful and they all have their strengths.

JS (Client) said that the carers are marvellous. I said to R the other day “I’m dying to have a shower, she covered my arm in cling film (to cover the dressings where she had fallen) to stop it getting wet and it was marvellous.” “They do all sorts of jobs for me, I don’t know what I would do without them.”

SG called from her new nursing home. She wanted to thank all the carers and office staff and everyone who helped her whilst we cared for her. She misses everyone but is happy in her home and she has made friends.  She would love anyone to visit.

At the first review with SB (Client) his niece, J said “SB is definitely being well looked after by your carers, and we are so chuffed that he is, he is eating well now and getting his medication regularly which is keeping him well.” J added “we are so pleased with Carers at Home and how they are taking care of SB, they are so much better than the last company, he is looking so well and now and is so much happier in himself”

SB agreed that he was much happier with the carers that now come to him, they are not bossy like the other ones and they are all polite and very friendly.

Ms (client) and husband BS said that already they are very happy with the care put in place. MS said she felt very safe and we didn’t try and take over. BS said what a professional outfit CAH are and he felt confident with the support. He really liked E (carer) and his demeanour and approach.

Client, LS, was very apprehensive about receiving care. At 95 years old she had never had help before and at the assessment with E was reluctant to accept assistance with personal care, despite struggling to do it herself following a recent fall. On the first visit Lilly assisted LS to strip wash, the client was very appreciative and said “thank you for being so kind and understanding, I found it very helpful and will look forward to seeing you again tomorrow.”

“I just wanted to email as following your visit the other week I was really poorly and have been pretty much since. The reason for my mail is I really need to say again just how wonderful PH is and I couldn’t let it go unmentioned any longer. The night when you had been I was so poorly I really didn’t think I was going to be able to go for our usual lunch out but P arrived and she was happy as always to take things as slow as I needed to getting me ready so that I was ok whilst doing other bits as I rested and she managed to get me out for lunch which was a near on miracle and I even managed to get some food down me and have a nice time. I wouldn’t have managed to eat at home as well as I did out the way I was. I don’t know how she does it. Since then she has just been a star (not that she hasn’t always been) but she just goes above and beyond to do everything she can to help me and do all she can and more.
I was so down about how bad my house had got and yesterday was so poorly again and just didn’t have the strength to go out so PH made lunch here for us and she completely gutted my downstairs, I’ve never known someone make someone feel so much better about something as she did for me yesterday.. I don’t know what I did before PH and I really felt I needed to say what a massive difference having her has made to my life. Not only does she help me like this but she makes me smile and laugh. She is so kind-hearted and sincere. There aren’t many people left in the world like her and I am so grateful that you gave me PH. I just wish there was a way I could let her know how much she was appreciated as I tell her all the time but I’m not sure she really understands just how much I mean it. Also really liking RD, she is lovely and we are getting on great… You do give me the nicest carers. Thanks”

At the review visit said everything was brilliant, he had never been happier. He is very happy with JC, his regular carer, she is brilliant, knows exactly what he wants, he never has to ask, she always thinks ahead. When asked if the carers carry out the tasks on the care plan to a satisfactory standard (client) said yes ‘and more’.

CAH have been visiting (above client) for 9 years in October this year. (Client) pointed out that in all that time CAH had never missed a visit and never been late! This is really important for (client) as he needs to be up and out of the house by a certain time in order to get to his office for meetings.

Client:

Came out of hospital during the day. E went to write up the Medical Administration Record sheets. The hospital had not prepared the nomad trays in time for discharge. (client) had been sent home with 27 tablets and it took E 2 hours to write up 19 MAR sheets. The client told E how grateful she was and so thankful that CAH decided to continue to visit her again so she could come home. The client was very happy to be home and very complimentary about the carers who visit her.

Said to Lilly she was feeling a lot better and did not know how much longer she would need the visits for but it had been very helpful and the carer who had been in so far CD was very nice.

When MC did the review with Mr and Mrs (clients) they said that ‘the carers are lovely and the office staff and on-call are very good at answering queries and the carers are very good at carrying out the daily tasks’. They added that the carers are very good with their time keeping and if they are late the office always rings. Overall they are very happy with the service.

Rang to say that it is 5 years on the 5th of this month when we started caring for him. He said thank you for doing such a wonderful job, he is very grateful for all the carers he has been sent and the care they do. He was very appreciative and said he knows it is not always easy and Lilly has a very difficult job.

When Lilly rang the client to contact the carer who was visiting her she said: “Do you want to speak to my lovely carer?” “She is so wonderful to me”. The carer is the only one so far who has encouraged the client to have a shower. She once was very reluctant but now looks forward to it!

Prospective Care Worker: When Lilly was interviewing she asked the candidate if how she had heard about CAH. She stated that whilst visiting in Elmbridge Village she saw one of our care workers and asked what it was like to work for CAH. The care worker said “it is an excellent company to work for, they are very supportive and I am very happy”. 16/07/2013

Care Worker: After a supervision with ES, the care worker completed a ‘Care Worker Supervision Report’. Under the heading ‘Name three things that you like about working for Carers at Home’, she wrote:

Community Matron: In an email Lilly received from SD (Community Matron) regarding Client, DM. SD and the Carers at Home team have worked closely and both been very involved in encouraging a very reluctant client with advanced dementia to have assistance with personal care, and to eat and drink. Lilly advised SD that DM has gone into respite and she would keep her updated on. SD emailed “Thank you for letting me know, well done for all your hard work.” 04/12/2017

Community Matron: CL rang regarding client SG who was admitted to hospital and said, “What your carers have done is phenomenal for this lady, they have done so much to enable her to stay at home, especially with all the care she requires. When I went to the clients on Wednesday and SG was being admitted your carer was there (K), I was so impressed with her professionalism and how caring she was. Physiotherapist: MP (community physiotherapist) complimented all the carers going to TS. She said to LR (CAH deputy manager) “All the carers are very good, they know what they are doing”. 15/04/2017

District Nurse: Lilly was discussing the care for this client today to the District Nurse she said the care that client receives is exceptional she is always pristine clean and her pressure areas are so good considering she has been bed-bound for quite a few weeks. Your carers are doing a really good job there; please pass this on to them. 29/02/2016

Paramedic: When the paramedics were attending (client) they remarked how well they dealt with the situation and LE who was on-call. 24/07/2016.

Paramedic: When J was with (client) the paramedics needed to be called. L said the care (provided by CAH) was amazing. L needed information on the client which she found in the CAH care plan. L said how impressed she was with the detail and how comprehensive it was. 27/07/2016

GP: The GP left a message on MH’s phone stating what a fantastic job she is doing with (client). This lady has a lot of mental health issues and physical disabilities which MH has helped her with. 07/09/2016

Occupational Therapist: When MC went to (client) yesterday the OT was there. The OT said to MC how smart CAH carers looked, and how professional they were. She compared the moving and handling to another agency who she said, did not demonstrate good techniques, not properly trained and were lifting a client out of the bed without using a hoist because they had not been trained how to use it. 21/09/2016

Community Nurse: We have had several messages recently complimenting us on the care and support given by Carers at Home staff. One, in particular, was from T, the Community Nurse who said of one of our carers (LO) “I want to compliment her on her exceptional care towards the client. She wrapped cling film around her dressing in order for her to have a shower that she so desperately wanted as well as washing and styling her hair.” T felt she deserved a pat on the back for going beyond her care duties. She said the carer was exceptional and she wanted to let Carers at Home know. “Well done and thank you for the fantastic care that you all give, but a special thank you to LO.” 15/08/14

District Nurse: our client said the district nurse asked her which agency she used. When she said Carers at Home, the district nurse said: “Oh Lilly’s girls, they are the best.” 14/03/2013

Occupational Therapist: rang to say that she had met PL and CS today to go over the hoisting. She said, “she was really impressed with the carers and how smoothly the moving and handling exercise went, the girls really know what they are doing”. 31/03/2010

Paramedic: THG visited a client this morning and found her unconscious. The paramedics were called and Lilly arrived soon after. The paramedics said to THG and again to Lilly after the event that THG did exactly the right procedure. They were impressed with her competence. THG kept calm and professional throughout the event. 14/04/2010

The Community Matron: said, “You have done a great job, they are getting on so much better and well done to the girls, an excellent job, the client’s legs are so much better”. 26/05/2010

A member of the stroke team at Milford Hospital who was a friend of the client: “I only ever hear excellent reports of Carers at Home, I am so pleased you were there with her, especially at the end”. 11/12/09

Paramedic: Our carer found the client on the floor and called the paramedics. The paramedics required certain information regarding the client and complimented us on the extensive care plan, saying it was “good and had all the information they needed”. 22/11/07

Family members: in a card wrote: To all the lovely ladies that looked after our dad (DA). We wanted to say a big thank you for all the care, support, chats and laughs you all had with our dad. He loved your visits and thought the care you all gave him was exemplary.  01/11/18

Daughter: A called to say that PD is still in Birtley House. It is still unknown if he will return home, but if he does he will no longer require CAH as he will require a Live-in carer. A thanked Carers at Home for all their help and support with PD over the years, especially a big thank you to E, who sorts everything out. P for the care she has given. Daughter: Lilly had a telephone conversation with SK (daughter of client, MK) who said that S was brilliant and goes over and beyond. She added that her mother adores her and she can’t find fault with her. SK also said when asking one of the care managers from the Guildford Social Care Team, for more hours she was told that Carers at Home are very expensive, SK replied that is because they are so good. She has had another agency previously who did not provide the care required and cannot compare to CAH.   19/06/2018

Son: Had a telephone conversation with AM (son of client, IB) who said we are very happy with Carers at Home, they are so much better than the last company. He added, “I have asked my mother how she is getting on with the carers from Carers at Home and she said she is over the moon and very happy with them.” 18/06/2018

Since TE has been coming in the house no longer smells, we are very happy with her she keeps everything up to date with the washing and packs and unpacks the dishwasher. Someone at Birtley House recommended CAH for my father when he needed care and it worked really well. When we were looking for care for my mother Birtley House recommended CAH again and it has been brilliant, we have been very happy you. The live in carer does not speak very good English and it is not working out. From the start A, my brother, and I were not impressed with the manager, unlike Ellen and yourself when you came to assess. We like the fact that you are a local agency, the carers speak good English and have a local knowledge of the area.

He was calm and peaceful sitting up in bed and not asking to go home. It’s hard but I know we have taken the right step at the right time. Sister: When KB went yesterday evening for the visit, she was distressed. The GP and District Nurse had been asked to visit during the day because (client)’s legs were leaking badly. Nobody had arrived when KB visited, the legs were worse and she did not know what to do. KB contacted 111 and they arranged for antibiotics and KB also redressed the legs. She rang to say how grateful she was to KB, she complimented her on how she took control and managed a situation which she found very distressing and did not know what to do or who to contact.

When SH the care worker arrived for her husband’s tea visit she stayed and supported the wife to shower and change. SH then prepared tea for the client which is not part of his usual care plan. Daughter: rang to say she was taking her Mum away for a few days. Lilly mentioned to her that her Mum often complained to the carers about the time of the visit. The other evening the carer was late by 20 minutes because her previous client was unwell and then she was then held up in traffic. The carer was very apologetic but still her Mum complained. Lilly explained that we always inform clients if we are going to be late but as her Mum does not answer the phone this is not possible.  The daughter said that her Mum was very pleased with the care and was always praising the carers to her. She added that the carers should not listen to her Mum when she complains about the time because she is very happy with the service. 02/07/09

We decided that is was partly due to Mum eating properly and taking her medication. Mum is also very happy with all her carers and the care she is receiving. Wife: Lilly and our carer visited the client to give him a bed bath before he was admitted into a nursing home. His wife and daughter were very appreciative of the help and care given by the Carers at Home staff. The following day, 23rd, the wife rang to say how her husband had settled into the nursing home. She said he always seemed less anxious and more relaxed when the Carers at Home carers and the district nurses were with him, and caring for him. She and her daughter said they had been very impressed with his carer because she was enthusiastic, willing to learn and did not mind what she did to help. She said they were happy with the nursing home but it “did not have a Lilly” and asked if they could contact me at any time for advice.

Husband: rang to discuss extra visits in the evening for help whilst his wife is away. He said that his carer was really fantastic this morning. She worked so hard and was so good. He also said that he is very happy with the service since Carers at Home have started, the visits are always on time and the time is just right for him to get to the office on time. He added that all the carers are very good and helpful. He said that this was also due the good training they have been given.

Occupational Therapist: When MC went to (client) yesterday the OT was there. The OT said to MC how smart CAH carers looked, and how professional they were. She compared the moving and handling to another agency who she said, did not demonstrate good techniques, not properly trained and were lifting a client out of the bed without using a hoist because they had not been trained how to use it. 21/09/2016

One, in particular, was from T, the Community Nurse who said of one of our carers (LO) “I want to compliment her on her exceptional care towards the client. She wrapped cling film around her dressing in order for her to have a shower that she so desperately wanted as well as washing and styling her hair.” T felt she deserved a pat on the back for going beyond her care duties. She said the carer was exceptional and she wanted to let Carers at Home know. “Well done and thank you for the fantastic care that you all give, but a special thank you to LO.” 15/08/14

Daughter-in-law: (of a client who had moved to a nursing home) “we are trying to get to the same level of care that you and the girls gave to Mum, which was excellent.” 10/10/12

Nurse at care home: said to TH when she went to take the client out “I’m glad it’s you, BR likes you and you are very professional and good. It shows you are committed to your job as you shine and obviously love it, you are lovely”. 12/05/2011

Occupational Therapist: rang to say that she had met PL and CS today to go over the hoisting. She said, “she was really impressed with the carers and how smoothly the moving and handling exercise went, the girls really know what they are doing”. 31/03/2010

Paramedic: THG visited a client this morning and found her unconscious. The paramedics were called and Lilly arrived soon after. The paramedics said to THG and again to Lilly after the event that THG did exactly the right procedure. They were impressed with her competence. THG kept calm and professional throughout the event. 14/04/2010

The Community Matron: said, “You have done a great job, they are getting on so much better and well done to the girls, an excellent job, the client’s legs are so much better”. 26/05/2010

Physiotherapist: said to D “you are an exceptional person, the agency you work for we had every confidence in. We were all so pleased you were there at the end”. 11/12/09

A member of the stroke team at Milford Hospital who was a friend of the client: “I only ever hear excellent reports of Carers at Home, I am so pleased you were there with her, especially at the end”. 11/12/09

Paramedic: Our carer found the client on the floor and called the paramedics. The paramedics required certain information regarding the client and complimented us on the extensive care plan, saying it was “good and had all the information they needed”. 22/11/07

Care Manager: J arranged extra care for AC while his mother was in hospital. CB (care manager) said to her “thank you to you and your amazing care staff for covering all the visits at such short notice and being so accommodating.” 20/07/18

Retirement Home: Former client who now has a live-in carer said “we want to say thank you for all the care you gave to the residents, we have never been let down by any of the carers, they were always reliable and all the carers have been so good. D, the cook at the establishment who was also present, added “you (Carers at Home) have such a good reputation, everyone says you are the best around.” 18/07/2018

Manager of Retirement Village: When Lilly rang to book an assessment with the daughter in law of NH, she said you have come very recommended by Keith, the manager of the retirement village. 21/02/2018

Manager Retirement Housing: The Daughter in law of a potential client rang to enquire about care for her mother in law who lives in a retirement housing scheme. She said the Manager, had recommended Carers at Home and said the carers are very nice that come to the residents here. 02/12/15

Warden: When Denise (Manager) went to assess a new client at the Warden said how pleased she is that it is Carers at Home looking after Mr x because she thinks the agency is excellent and we are all wonderful. 17/07/09

Warden: When going to assess a new client, Lilly met the warden who said “thank goodness it’s your agency who will be going into Mr X?”. Mr X is reluctant to accept care. She said “I think your carers will be able to persuade him to have help”. 26/10/09

Warden: said of the client “I have seen a 200% improvement in her since your carers have been coming in, I’m hoping Carers at Home will be able to pick up another client soon who needs help when she comes out of hospital”. 19/11/09
